Why do most cake recipes ask for a pinch of salt?

I always wondered - and what happens if you don't include it?Why do most cake recipes ask for a pinch of salt?
Salt causes a chemical reaction which extracts the flavors from the other ingredients.

It's very important in cooking in general. Why do most cake recipes ask for a pinch of salt?
Salt help to bring out the flavor of your food, because is can also spoil the food you just add a pinch, some food will taste OK if you leave out the salt (cakes, pies, some sauces etc).
the cake doesnt rise
oh who knows but did you know that you really dont have to put salt in them i never do! and everything turns out great!!!
In my opinion, the reason ';salt'; is needed .....it helps perk up the other flavors in the cake....keeps the flavor from being dull, plain...even if it's sweet the salt gives a kick to the cake. It's the same as when you cook potatoes in water....a pinch of salt keeps it from being bland.....

PASS THE SALT PLEASE...LOL
It brings out the flavour of food, even cakes.
According to Alton Brown (Good Eats, food network), failure to add salt to dough will result in 'son of blob'... It helps control the yeast action. Leaving out salt is fatal for successful baking of anything that uses yeast to rise.

It also may be for flavor. Salt helps things taste like themselves. Too much and it will obviously taste salty. But too little and it will taste flat.
nothing will happen if u dont put it in. salt helps it taste better and it make its raise a bit too
For some odd reason, salt makes things taste sweeter and brings out the sweet flavor in pastries. I think it's also along the lines of using baking soda or powder. One common, old-fashioned practice is to add salt to fruit and sugar to vegetables. Crazy, huh?
