Why are there so many Sponge Cake recipes?

I have been looking around for a sponge cake recipe %26amp; there seems to be so much variation in the recipes. I tried 2 different ones on the weekend, one from a cookbook %26amp; one from a baking blog %26amp; they were both awful. The blog one was like really big yucky souffle %26amp; the cookbook one was like toast, dry %26amp; crumbly. I followed the recipes exactly.

I think it's a part of cooking - trial and error. You just try a few different recipes til you get to one that works for you and your oven. Another good option is to ask people. There are no good sponge cake recipes. They all taste like sponge, hence the name. The only time Sponge cake taste good is when you add fruits on top.
